With summer heat approaching, the air conditioner will be an essential appliance within most homes and apartments across Australia. Due to the affordability both in the purchase and running, window air conditioners will be the most preferred choice by many. One thing that stands out about the unitary AC units is their ease of installation. They do not require you to be qualified to carry out a successful installation. We are providing you with some essential steps on how to properly install your window air conditioner.
How to Install a Window Air Conditioner
There are a few things you need to consider before starting the installation work. First, you need to select a window that’s close to a power outlet. You will find that most window AC units have power cords that measure between 3 and 6 feet long. Therefore, you need to select a suitable window. To make the installation work easier, it’s important to have the owner’s manual. You also need to have a screw driver, measuring tape, scissors and manufacturer-provided brackets and screws ready.
Here are the main steps:
Step 1: Find the Window Centre
Remove all the pieces from the box and confirm that everything has been provided. Then measure the width of the windows and mark centre. With the centre marked, it will be easy to make sure that the side panel evenly reaches both sides of the window.
Step 2: Open and Prepare the Window
Open the window to make room for the installation. In most cases, the manufacturer provides a weather strip to protect the window from damages while installing. Make sure that you have installed the strip first.
Step 3: Attach the Side Panel
Slide the panels into the right place on your unit and secure them using the screws provided. Make sure that all the screws have been installed to avoid gaps that could let warm air, pollution and allergens into your home.
Step 4: Insert the AC in the Window
You need two people to execute this step safely. Pick up the air conditioner and centre it in your window. Then tightly close your window to keep the AC in place. Note that most of the unit’s weight will be outside and therefore you need to be very careful.
Step 5: Install the L Brackets
Although brackets might differ between manufacturers, L brackets are the most commonly used to hold the window in place. Screw the L brackets into the top of the open window. The brackets prevent the window being pushed up after the installation is done.
Step6 : Attach Panels
This is one of the most crucial steps. With the AC in place, you need to seal the open spaces. Adding window padding is the perfect way to do this. If the manufacturer never provided the padding, design an alternative model. For example, you can extend the side panel to reach your window.
Step 7: Secure Unit and Start Cooling
You’re done with installation! Now it’s time to enjoy the appliance. Just plug in and turn on your AC. The room should start cooling immediately.
